It is important to spot these signs in time \u2014 a worn tyre brakes worse, punctures more often and can fail at speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Tread depth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main and simplest criterion. You can measure the depth with a tread depth gauge at several points across the width of the tyre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Passenger car tyres:<\/strong> the wear limit is marked by TWI indicators \u2014 1.6 mm high bars at the bottom of the grooves. On wet roads, grip drops noticeably at as little as 3 mm.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Truck tyres:<\/strong> on the steer axle they are usually replaced earlier, with around 3\u20134 mm remaining, as it determines handling. On the drive and trailer axles, tyres can be used longer or sent for retreading.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Forklift tyres:<\/strong> solid (super-elastic) tyres have an indicator line on the sidewall \u2014 when wear reaches it, the tyre is replaced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Tyre age<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rubber compound ages even when not in use: it loses elasticity and becomes covered in cracks. Visible damage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immediate replacement is required when:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a sidewall bulge \u2014 a swelling on the sidewall that indicates broken cord threads;<\/li>\n\n<li>a deep cut, especially on the sidewall;<\/li>\n\n<li>exposed cord \u2014 when the casing threads are visible;<\/li>\n\n<li>tread separation or deformation that makes the wheel wobble while driving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Uneven wear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wear pattern will tell you what is wrong with the vehicle.
