Passenger car tyres may seem like a simple product, but they determine how the car brakes on a wet road, how quietly it runs and how much fuel it uses. Here is what to consider when buying.
1. Size — strictly as recommended
Permitted sizes are listed on the placard on the driver's door pillar, in the owner's manual or on the fuel filler flap. Tyres of a different size may rub against the wheel arch liners, distort speedometer readings and interfere with ABS and ESP systems.
2. Profile height: comfort or handling
- High profile (65–70%) — softer over bumps and better protects the rim from impacts.
- Low profile (40–50%) — more precise steering response, but harsher and more vulnerable on poor roads.
3. Tyres for a hot climate
In summer, asphalt in Uzbekistan heats up to 60 °C and above. Tyres must withstand these temperatures without rapid wear or loss of grip. Choose models with a heat-resistant rubber compound and keep an eye on pressure: an overheated, underinflated tyre wears out many times faster.
4. Load and speed indices
The load index (for example, 91 — up to 615 kg per wheel) and the speed index (for example, V — up to 240 km/h) must be no lower than those recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
5. How to buy and fit
- Replace tyres at least in pairs on the same axle, or better still, as a full set of four.
- If you are replacing only two tyres, fit the new ones on the rear axle: this makes the car more stable when braking and cornering.
- After fitting, always have the wheels balanced, and if the old tyres wore unevenly, check the wheel alignment.
