How to choose tyres for your application
Long-haul and long-distance routes
On long highway runs, even wear and high mileage matter most. Steer axles are fitted with rib-pattern tyres: they hold their course and run cooler. Drive axles take block-pattern models for reliable traction, and trailers take low rolling resistance tyres that save fuel.
Regional transport
Frequent acceleration, braking and turning wear tyres faster than highway driving. Here it is worth choosing a reinforced casing and a tread that resists abrasion and kerb damage.
Construction and mixed roads
Dump trucks and machinery working on soil and gravel need mixed-pattern tyres with tough, cut-resistant rubber. For heavy-duty conditions, also check out the sections “Mining equipment tyres” and “OTR tyres”.
What to look for when ordering
- Size — for example, 315/80 R22.5 or 12.00 R20: it is marked on the sidewall of your current tyre.
- Load index — two numbers separated by a slash (for example, 156/150) show the permitted load for single and dual fitment.
- Speed index — the letter after the load index, for example L or M.
- Axle — steer, drive or trailer: this determines the tread pattern.
